Why build Faith House? Many people take the ability to live independently for granted. Adults with developmental disabilities don't. For them, the ability to live as independently as possible is a gift. It is also a gift to their families. As parents consider the future for their disabled children, they search for residential programs that mirror their values and lifestyles. They want reassurance that their child will live in a homey setting and receive the care and assistance they need to live a fulfilling life. The 2007-2011 Michigan Developmental Disabilities State Plan estimates that 1.8 percent of Michigan's 10,120,860 citizens have development disabilities. That's 182,175 individuals. Yet, a limited number of residences for developmentally disabled adults exist. As longevity increases in our society, the needs of a growing population of developmentally disabled adults far exceed the resources available-and those available tend to be secular in nature.
Covenant Enabling Residences of Michigan is a division of the Evangelical Covenant Church. In building homes for the developmentally disabled, their goal is to offer a Christian alternative-a lifestyle grounded on biblically based Christian values and standards. Faith House, which we hope will be the first of many similar residences in Grand Rapids, will be designed for six high-functioning adults. These residents will live together as a Christian family, able to test their independence while having a supportive structure available day and night. Faith House will also include a small residence for an onsite caregiver.
Opening the door to intergenerational, volunteer and employment opportunities, Faith House is located on the campus of Covenant Village of the Great Lakes, a continuing care retirement community and a sister ministry. Hopes and dreams will grow in an atmosphere that reflects the love of God and Bible-based Christian values.
